North Korea targets South Korea with gambling software

North Korea has been accused of distributing software which would allow users to operate illegal online gambling sites in other countries which would solely target South Korean gamblers.

This Monday, South Korea’s leading newspaper Dong-a Libo have reported that a group of the country’s “white hat” hackers had uncovered a hidden program titled “poker game server” on a website which was designed by online security experts to check malign codes in digital files.

The hackers claim that this hidden gambling server software had an IP address from North Korea’s intelligence bureau, which has already been accused in the past of paralyzing the online activities of South Korean broadcasters and banks in a series of attacks which were coordinated in August 2013. This new gambling software was apparently made available in the same month as the online attacks took place.

This gambling software would enable users to operate different types of gambling sites. The hackers believe that the North Korean government has already earned a lot of money by operating such sites itself or selling the program to organized crime rings in the South.

The irony in this entire situation is very clear since Kim Jong-un has purged his uncle from the regime’s inner circle a couple of years back for a list of offenses. And, you’ve guessed it, that list included gambling as well. A lot of Asian countries have now started to pay closer attention to online pokies sites to see if there is any connection between them and the North Korean software.
