Gaming lawmakers are looking to revise gambling laws concerning online gamblers in Malta. The emphasis will be on providing better protection to online gamblers.

This September the Malta Gaming Authority is to propose changes to online player gambling laws that have been going through revisions since 2013. A spokesperson for the MGA states that the purpose of such a review was to “innovate and extend” gambling laws pertaining to iGaming and particularly to player safety while engaging in such activities.

According to the same MGA official, these efforts had nothing to do with the closing down of online casino operators licensed in Malta and running their business in Italy. Italy’s struggle against said operators was due to the suspicion that the businesses were run by crime group Ndrangheta.

Following the dramatic events in Italy the MGA, together with Italian authorities, decided to indeterminately suspend the licenses of casino operators operational in Italy until the investigations end and result in verdicts.

Previous disapproval suffered by the MGA in 2012 for closing down two casino operators determined an employee re-structuring and company re-branding in an effort to show the world that the organization is trustworthy.

In 2014 the European Council was looking to reevaluate eSports betting laws and licensing with regard to the way this service is used by gamblers rather than the location it is being used from. For this reason, Malta’s request for Council clarification on the matter was withdrawn. Although Malta agreed to the newly demarcated definition, the country was of the opinion that this new ruling would influence the eSports betting undesirably.
